Hindi is a direct descendant of Sanskrit through Prakrit and Apabhramsha. It has been influenced and enriched by Dravidian, Turkish, Farsi, Arabic, Portugese and English. Hindi started to emerge as Apabhramsha in the 7th century and by the 10 century became stable. Hindi literature as a whole can be divided into four stages: Adikaal (the Early Period), Bhaktikaal (theDevotional Period), Ritikaal (the ScholasticPeriod) and Adhunikkaal(the Modern Period). The Adhunikaal or the Modern Period in Hindi literature began in the middle of the 19th century. BharatenduHarishchandra (1849-1882), who brought in a modern outlook in Hindi literature, is described as the “Father of Modern Hindi Literature”. Literature in Hindi language includes literature in the various Central Zone Indo-Aryan languages which have writing systems. The literature was produced in dialects such as Braj, Bundeli, Awadhi, Kannauji, Khariboli, Marwari, Maithili, Magahi and Bhojpuri. Our library is rich in the books covering Hindi Literaturerangingfrom poetry and prose to greatest stalwart in the field of fiction. To meet the challenges and demands of modern phase, with highly interactive classes, the departments also organizes college and inter-college level activities e.g. debate, essay competition, poem recitation, seminar and extension lecture.

Different career options are available for graduates in this field, for instance one can become a teacher, translator or a freelancer as well. For imparting a program in the foreign language, translators also work in fields such as scientific literary, technical or business translation bureaus, publishing houses, international organizations, hotel industry, travel and tourism sector etc.
